Turn "Who By Fire" review - I think I judged this show to quickly

SPOILERS FOR THIS EPSIODE BELOW

So last week after that confusing opening that I didn't really feel hit the mark that they were hoping for I think that I had judged this show and made my opinion on it. So going into this weeks episode I wasn't really expecting much or for it to be much better then the pilot. But I am happy to say that I was wrong and that you should never judge a show by its pilot shall we say, it was a scale up from the pilot not by much but it was defiantly a step in the right direction. So I just want to speak about the points that I made in the review for the pilot first being that I didn't feel that they explained themselves very well or hit on the points that they were making. The next that Jamie Bell I felt was weak in the show which I apologise for because he was defiantly have us a strong preformace as did the rest of the cast. Then I also mentioned that I thought it was like watching another pirates of the Caribbean movie which I am happy to say that I was wrong about and that they proved me wrong this week. I think that it was harsh to judge this show so quickly and that it has proven that any show can win you over if you just give it a chance. Which I would defiantly say about this show it starts out slow but if you stick with it you are in for a treat.

So after last weeks opener Abe I feel finally thought that he might have some peace being somewhat in the clear for the murder of the general and the town no longer hating him. Which was then turned upside down as a mysterious pair burnt down his outhouse that contained all of his crop to sell over winter. He's just not able to catch a break with those cabbages is he really last week half of them we're eaten or rotten to the core and now this week the rest of them have been burnt to a crisp. I think someone is trying to to prove to him that maybe he should just give up with the farming. What stood out this week is that Abe is very much still on the sidelines at the moment between helping the colonists and being a spy and sticking true with his father and the redcoats. You defiantly saw that contradiction within him coming out this week as he had to make a choice between what was in his heart and what was in his head. I think that this is something that is going to be at the centre of the show as Abe slowly becomes the spy that he will turn out to be later on down the road. Jamie Bell gave a strong performance this week which I think I overlooked last week just how great he really is in the show. Mostly because last weeks pilot was very confusing and had a plot that didn't really make sense until the ready end of the episode. But this week when you have a clear goal and outline for the show like they now do you finally see some of those stand out preformances come through. He showed that he's not just the little farmer that doesn't go against his fathers orders. But that he can be a schemer and quite evil when he wants to be making sure that he did everything that he could to keep  Anna safe and out of the Majors view and his fathers.

So this week Anna was under suspicion of killing the general that if you remember had been found dead with his throat cut last week that the town then suspected Abe of doing. But with Anna coming under suspicion and her relaying information to the colonists thorough her washing line it was up to Abe to try and keep her safe and show the true killer. Heather Lind (Anna) again showed a very wrong preformace this week and her and Jamie work very well off of each other and have great chemistry on screen. Well they did have great chemistry on screen but at the end of this weeks epsiode Abe didn't want any contact from her and for her to stop what's she's doing with the washing line. Sorry it's confusing and the stroyline and plot still isn't completly explained as of yet so everything is still frying my brain as I try and keep up with everything. But we are still only two episodes in to a brand new show so you have to forgive them for the plot as they try and expand it and get the ball rolling. But what was great about this episode is that we started to see are first signs of spying and lies coming through in Abes character as he asked Anna to look throught the generals belonging for some in dictation for why he was out there that night. This is where they found a love letter to the general from a woman from the town which Abe could then use to find the "real" killer of the general. Remember the words real because what I have come to expect from this show now is that not everything is as it seems. Also to expect everything to just be turned up on its head like it was with the generals killer.

Just when we thought that Abe might keep his secret about the letter from his father and the major he told them and showed them giving them the vital evidence to finding the killer. It was great tension this week which I have quickly found that this show does well and manages to nail the periodness of the drama very well. I have been very surprised at just how much I have turned around on my opinion of the show and have started to love the show. The tension in the scene was great those as we saw what I would take as Abe being tourn with whether he should go again this town and keep it to himself and be the spy he will turn out to be or show the major and his father. It was again the suttle little signs of him becoming the spy which is going to the major part of this first season I feel as I think we won't really see him become that spy until maybe the end of this season start of next. But it was just some brilliant preformances from all of the cast again I can't fault them for it the cast is brilliantly put together. I know that I criticised the show last week for feeling like Pirates of the Carribean and having Gibbs from Pirates in the show. But I feel that was rather harsh and that there isn't anything wrong with it being that way because they are both in the same time setting and it's a brilliant setting for a show. Kevin McNally (Judge Richards) was just utterly brilliant again as he wa last week and shows that sense of power that he has over his son in a lot of ways. I find that he's e one that Abe is having to worry about most disappointing so his judgement on whether or not to go against his family rests on making his father proud. There's a lot of tension between the two characters like a real father and son which is something I love to see from the show that not everything is happy family's.

My stand out preformance this week those was Angus Macfadyen who plays Robert Rogers a general that turns up at the majors camp in search of the killer of the dead general. His preformace was utterly brilliant the intimidation that he brings to each character is amazing and he doesn't care about being an animal or a monster when he has to be. After seeing him very briefly last week in the pilot who again I felt was one of the best preformances it was great to see him properly this week. Watching his take Richards and Abe to the barrel containing the corpse of the dead general was disgusting but brilliant to watch. As both Richards and Abe gagged at the smell and sight of the body Rogers just went on about things as normal and acted like it was just a everyday thing looking at both of them like they were being kids about it. It's hear that we find out that the general knew the man that killed hi as he wa stabbed in the back meaning he turned his back on his attacker. He's a pig but in a likeable way and doesn't take no for an answer and will get what he wants as he tried to find the red coat that killed the general. Now what was brilliant about his character is just how brutal and dark he is when Abe finds the killer of the general finding it to be a drummer part of the generals squad. Rogers gives a witty little line about who he must have been sick of being told to drum and it was dark but brilliantly funny and showed just what little respect they all have for the redcoats. The whole epsiode in general very much felt like it hit the marks that it wasn't hitting last week and they were finally getting the piot moving like they want to.

Overall the last 15 minutes of the epsiode were where the show showed signs of going in the right direction and that they had a great plot set up for the future. Rogers and Abe were the stand out characters for the epsiode and overall the whole entire cast managed to give brilliant preformances and it blows my mind how a cast of this standard was managed to be put together. I have no doubt in my mind that while this show might start off slow and we may have another slow epsiode to come where it's slow to get off the mark we are in for a treat with this one. What I was overly surprised about is how much my opinion changed about this show and that I changed my tune quite a bit about the show. Especially if you have read my review of last weeks episode I wasn't very kind about it or feel very good coming out of that episode. But I am happy to say that I am in it for the rest of the season now and that you should never judge a show by its pilot because their still working out the kinks in the show at that point. I'm just glad that Turn has started to show signs of improvement in the second epsiode especially when you look at some shows (agents of sheild) take more then half a season to show signs of improvement and going in the right direction. Let's just hope that continue on the way that their going and that it starts to pick up the pace a bit less slow more fast.
