Hannibal "Yakimono" Review - The Ripper does love his theatre

Well to say that I felt like standing up and giving the show a round of applause at the end of the latest episode is an understatement. Hugh Dancy who plays "Will" in the show promised up a sort of mid-season finale if you will its that high a standard and closes and finishes a lot of story lines. Well he wasn't joking  was he we were treated to an episode that was worthy of an season finale, it wrapped up old story lines and paved way for some new problems to arise if Will has his way. What stood out is that Will called the rippers killings as pieces of "theatre" that he doesn't so much leave them out on the road when he's finished them he makes them into art to show off his work to the FBI. So if thats true then lets say that he has gotten it to a fine art if this episode is anything to go by it showed brilliant writing and production that we have become accustomed to with this show.

So lets start with poor old Chilton from the start of the show you had that feeling that we were going to be looking at a somewhat Chilton focused episode. Which when it comes to this show is never a good thing seeing as last week Gideon was a main focus and we all know what happened to him. N if Will wasn't a jinx before he certainly is now seeing as last week he did say that anyone that was close to him would be killed by Hannibal. So it shouldn't be any surprise that he was next on the chopping block which leads me to wonder how far off from the books their taking the show now. Maybe were going to be seeing the show going in a different direction to the books because if you have read the books Chilton is a main character in the books and for them to kill him off half way through the season is ballsy. But it worked and if they were to have written it down on paper I wouldn't have believed them that they would be able to pull it off it feels more of something that you would do for a season finale. This episode also gave us a look into Hannibal's long planned out master plan and showed just how smart and big a genius he is having had Chilton as his plan to go down for the murders all along. He did after all in Chilton's words fit the description after all for the murders and had the same background so it would fit perfectly. It was a brilliant and fitting end to a character that finally felt like he was being put to good use seeing as in the film adaptions of Lambs and Red Dragon he never felt like he was used very well. Almost just to be there as a background character. But getting back to the episode we got to see the rippers theatre at work in Chiltons home which felt like something from a gothic play. Watching him walk into that room in the cellar and seeing a mutilated Gideon on deaths door with parts of him still ready for sawing was creepy and twisted. But to be honest its nothing we don't expect to come from this show now and it was great to see the end to Gideon meaning one of many story lines are finally wrapped up. This episode felt very much as a way to wrap up old story lines and pave a way for a new direction for the show.

Talking of directions Will was finally directed away from his cell and back out into the free world where he was greeted by Jack and taken to the crime scene where he found Miriam. What was great about this episode is that again we finally got some answers about Miriam and what had happened to her. It was just another of the few story lines that they finally wrapped up and gave us some answers to this one being very long overdue. But it worked it all slotted in together to make one great episode and nothing felt like it shouldn't have been there. This whole episode was all about theatre and that idea that the ripper saw this as a way of showing off his work and having the big unveiling of his true identity or fake identity as we all know who it really is. For a while through this episode I though that we were going to see the start of Red Dragon especially with the final scene which I will get into later but it all felt like it was going to come to a head which in many ways it did. It all came to the head of Chilton not having much of a head left which left me shocked and satisfied because I felt that they had approached this in a way that it was deserved and I didn't feel that there wasn't any need for him to die. It just gives Will more of a reason to find out the truth about Hannibal and paves solid stepping stones for Red Dragon now.

But back to Miriam we got to see this week where she was being kept and where else would it be other then an old creepy building in the middle of nowhere there the first places I would look for a murderers hideout. It also acted as a crime scene or history room for all of the rippers past murders as evidence for everyone of them was put on show there all left out for the FBI to find and discover. This also meant that we were treated to one of the brilliant clock motion scenes as Will tried to tie all the pieces together as they got closer to the ripper only to find that there further away. The house felt like something out of Silence of the Lambs I was half expecting Bill to come out with some lotion and the hose. (if you haven't seen Silence of the Lambs what are you doing with your life) But they did well at placing all of the evidence there so as to refresh are minds a bit in a way of some of the past crimes so  that they could wrap them all up. It's something thats brilliant about the writing behind this show that they can manage to wrap up multiple story lines in one episode but never make it feel like its a big slap in the face as their doing it or their throwing loads of past events at us at once.

Will finally made it back to his dogs who ran through the snow to greet him and welcome him home the same can't be said about Alana who was still just as cold to him. Which seeing as he did try to kill her new "lover" its not hard to see why. But again I still felt that Alana is there just for the sake of being there she still feels under developed and has never really been given much reason for me to care about her or her actions in the show. Miriam has a better developed character and she was meant to have been dead with only a arm left of her. Alana I still feel is the one to watch in the next few episodes as I still think that we will be looking at her death seeing as she is starting to out stay her welcome and becoming less uses to Hannibal. Which when you become no use to Lecter your more then likely to end up on his plate and straight into his mouth. It would be great for the show to try and develop her more and make her more of a likeable character but I just find that she is to far gone and were to far into the show now for anyone to start caring. But no matter what she still managed to make for a great scene with Will has tensions ran high between them you could feel the chill and ice bitterness between them both. Will still showing hate for Hannibal which is much to Alana's disgust seeing as she is gullible to all of the lies that he tells her.

Miriam was are over episode centred character as Jack and the rest of the mystery INC squad try and get some answers from her to just who the ripper was. But alas she couldn't remember which was convenient and for a while I was sure that she was secretly working with Hannibal not through love but through fear. Wouldn't that have been twisted having to help save the person that locked you up for two years and chopped your arm off. But it turned out that she was just a very scared and messed up young girl that after two years of being left to rot in a hole in the ground was just as terrified as ever of the ripper. What was great is the way that they went about it with her character they had her as someone that came off like she was suffering with post-traumatic stress which to be honest I think that I would have been as well. She was given a new arm which just made her look even creepier as she walked around Dr. Lecter's office with him trying to get her to remember as much as she could. Which you would think well why are you doing that for your the one that kidnapped and mutilated her she will remember that it was you. But ever the smart one is old Lecter he had it all planned out from the very beginning which makes me wonder well when did Will come in on this plan. Or was he just another one of his experiments to see how much he could twist with his mind and then when he was done with him he would just dispose of him as well. Thats what I very much see Will and Miriam as the children and creations of the ripper frankenstien's monsters if you will his creations to tamper with and puppet as he so chooses. Which makes me wonder if he planned on Miriam killing Chilton all along because if that was his plan it just blows my mind that the writers for the show came up with this long expanding storyline that all came to a head in this one episode. Its brilliant writing and you can't not but commend them for pulling it off in the way that they have.

Now briefly lets talk about that final scene did anyone get a bit of a Red Dragon vibe from it or was that just me because I was literally expecting to watch Lecter come up behind Will trying to kill him. But it turned out that I was wrong and it was because he was looking to restart his therapy with him again. Which maybe were now looking at the start of a new master plan by one of his childrenWill, I look at this second half of the season now as a new beginning of something bigger and dark on the horizon ready to come out. I found the end scene even those it was a slower pace to rest of the episode it worked at calming it down and bringing everything back to a sense of normality in a way. But now I mention it a lot but I do still think that they have done it as fan service as a hint to people that have read the books that Red Dragon is coming and that the final scene is a reference to it because it very much fit the criteria for it.

But overall there isn't anything back you can say about this episode or this show in general its just masterpiece of a show and it blows my mind how more people aren't watching it. I will say this again because I think I said this in one of my videos on my channel but just tell people to watch it and give it a try because they really are all missing out on a masterpiece of a programme. Are we looking at the start of the Will and Jack BFF group now that theres no more Hannibal and Will ?? All we can say is that we are in for some exciting second half to the season.
