Agents of Shield Providence Review - Agents of ?? nothing I guess
Spoiler below
So after the big reveal last week to the team that Shield was no more and that they had been over run by Hydra you could tell that everything wasn't going to be smooth sailing from here on in. Coulson it just isn't going his way is it the group that he had dedicated his life to and died for turn out to be nothing more then HYRDA. Also agent Ward has turned out to be a Hydra agent working for Garret which the group don't realise as of yet but come on its not hard to notice that something isn't right with him isn't it. He's not exactly the most trust worthy or loyal solider after all he killed a disabled man in cold blood and he has about as much personality as a pile of bricks. But it does make for some interesting turn of events. What I found watching this episode is that I think the producers of the show have finally started showing the programme that they wanted to show in the first place. The writing is better, the characters are much more interesting and nothings better then watching a pissed off Coulson what could be better. I feel bad for slagging off this show a few weeks ago and ever since Winter Solider all of the Shield stuff has become so much more interesting to watch unfold.
So this week we picked up more or less straight after where we left off with the last episode as Coulson and the group watch as Shield is exposed to the world as being corrupt and not as trusted as they thought they were. It was also up to him as the highest member of the organisation I guess now or what is left of it to find the still trusted bases so they know where they stand. Where they find out that they have 3 bases including the hub that they can trust. Which doesn't really put you in good hope for the team left with hardly any members and a plane that has see better days well I think that the Wright brothers plane would do them more use then their one at the moment. Its made for a much better show as we watch this team go from having all the facilities and resources that they could want and be left with nothing but two other bases and a broken plane. Its here that Coulson found a morse code signal that he took as being from Nick Fury which as far they are concerned is dead as the dodo. But what was great was that they still have that trouble trusting members of the team even when they didn't show themselves to be Hydra members during the siege. That was something I was scared about was that after last week they would just forget about the fact that they had just been taken over by Hydra and that anyone could be a member.
So Coulson still looked to be a member of Hydra in Mai eyes as he could have just been getting messages from them as a trick to draw them out into the open. Which to be honest would have just been stupid and not really made any sense seeing as what is the point of having the lead member of the show and much loved character by fans turn out to be Hydra. But it did make you worried as you thought back to what happened to him when they brought him back to life and brainwashed him with all those thoughts of being on a beach. This is when we found out that the only member of shield that knew about the Tahiti programme was Fury which then made me think back to the winter solider that maybe it wasn't fury that authorised it. The show is certainly starting to show legs now and that its finally hitting the make and getting off the ground as even now you wonder if any other members of the team could turn out to be Hydra.
We also got to see a lot of Ward and Garret the comedy double act that you just want to put next to each other turn them to an angle and give them a slap. Ward just made me want to hate him more then I already did and Garret is still a brilliant character that continues to be a strong character for the show. We also saw the return of the woman in the flowery dress who we haven't seen since when Coulson found out what happened to him I guess. Again she was a strong character that was great to see back that showed signs of feeling less sure of the organisation that she was apart of. I think I would be as well if I found out that the person I thought was some physic was nothing more then a dopey shield agent. It wouldn't surprise me if she turned against them and started to try and help Coulson it would make for some great TV seeing as she certainly wasn't happy about being stuck underneath a barber shop with Ward and Garret. Ward certainly showed no signs of changing and going back to his team did he, it all just seemed like a game to him but it was satisfying to watch Garret smash his teeth in even if it was for the sake of getting to Coulson. The person that annoyed me this week was Sky because she is blinded by love for the brick that is Ward she's managed to compromise the team as they entered the secret Shield base that as far as the world was concerned doesn't exist.
The base is Providence given its name by the utterly brilliant Patton Oswalts Agent Eric Koneig who tells Coulson that he was instructed to look after the base after the attack by the Gintari or whatever they were called you know the aliens in Avengers. But he was a breath of fresh air and comedy in an episode that was otherwise really dark and bleak as nothing was really going for them up to this point; We finally managed to see a glimmer of hope as they finally found some where safe and secure that they would be able to organise their next operation and where they go from here. Koneig while only being in the last 15 minutes of the episode was absolutely brilliant and made the episode as he gives them the guided tour of his facility. What was brilliant was when Coulson asked him what he did down here and he tells him that he's been clocking major hours into call of duty in which Coulson said he used to play. I guess with the situation that their in at the moment it wasn't really the time for him to be playing on the xbox or playstation. Does leave you with a great image of him sitting their playing call of duty destroying all of his competitors be funny to see. But during a one on one conversation this is where Coulson is told that Fury is still alive and under no circumstances can he tell the team. Which we all know that he won't be able to keep his mouth shut and will end up telling one of the other members of the squad. Which I guess doesn't matter now that a beaten up Ward has made it to the base under the direction of Sky.
The episode this week ended with the return of yet another one of the villains of the show Ian Quinn who has also been broken out by Garret and his team. It was also the reveal that Garret has acquired Quinns gravitonium. You can tell that everything has been leading to this and that everything is now falling into place as they set everything up for a big finale I can expect.
Providence was another brilliant episode of the show while it didn't meet the standards of the last two episodes of the show it still kept up the new direction that the show is heading in. With the introduction of Konieg to the show he is a breath of fresh air to the show and makes a great addition to a already brilliant cast. Whats brilliant with the way that the show is going now is that its so unpredictable and we don't have any idea of whats to come in the next few episodes of the show. The future certainly is uncertain for Coulson and his team but it makes for brilliant TV to watch and I think Shield is starting to show its self as less of a joke and more of a brilliant bit of television.
