Amazing Spider-Man 2 Review - This is how you do a three villain movie

So before I start I'm going to keep all of the spoilers for the movie about the plot etc out of this review that will be in another blog post where i will talk about where this leaves us going into further sequels and sinister six. So don't worry about any spoilers so if you haven't seen the film yet then don't worry about reading on.

The first thing that I will say is that I have never really been a big fan of Spider-man and never really fell in love with the first Amazing Spider-man movie or it's story. I never really felt that it hit the mark that I wanted it to the only thing that I was happy about is that they were following the comics more then the Rami films did. So going into this film I wasn't expecting much from it and wasn't expecting to be wowed in any way or really expecting the plot to work because I think that we all remember Rami Spider-Man 3. My problem is that I expected a clunky messy plot where they tried to fit in all three villains and have it be rushed with a story that left us feeling like are heads exploding. But that wasn't the case here they have managed to pace a film out that gives each villain his due and makes it clear that electro is the main villain and the other two are sidelines.

So shall we talk about the villains first seeing as they are the big thing with this film all the hype has especially been around Jamie Foxx and his preformance as the shocking character. (Sorry no pun intended) But I will say that if you have any fears about his preformace or the way they have portrayed him in the film then let me out you at ease and tell you that they have handled the character brilliantly. He's dark, creepy and has a tragic sad story behind him that made me at times really want to feel sorry for the character as he doesn't start out as a villain he's made into one. What's brilliant is that they spend a lot of time working on setting up the character making you feel sorry for him and almost go aww bless him he's that sort of loser character. Someone that just wants to be the hero and wants to be noticed well he certainly becomes noticeable quickly when you look like a massive blue nightlight it's not hard to be noticed really. They have made him modern as well which is what I about his character there's no dopey looking green and yellow suit for this villain, instead they go for a much better leather style suit with a lighting blot on one of the arms. It's suttle but still gives that understanding of that he's Electro and you shouldn't mess with him. The only problem I will say that I have with his character and it's not so much with Jamie Foxx it's the soundtrack and the editors and director of the film I have a problem with. Everything Electro says something villanous or evil they start to play the same sort of soundtrack that if you have watched the trailers you will of heard it. But while it works for affect the first maybe two times that you hear it ater that you just want them to stop we understand that's he's a villain don't have to keep telling us. Then my only other problem is that they have this very serious evil villain with a strong motive for the reason that's he's doing this and then you stick him in a scene with Spider-Man. Now I know that they have defiantly tried to make this series a lot more family orientated but Spidey just takes away that fear factor about him. He makes it very funny and comedic and he looses what's scary about him then which I wasn't such a fan of. But other then that I would say you can rest easy that Jamie Foxx plays a villain that until now has just been begging to be put on the big screen.

Next we have rihno well he's more blink and your miss him as I think that they have put him in this movie less as a main cast member and more to set him up for future instalment. So are just say this now he's at the start and the end of the movie and that's it there is nothing more of Rhino in the movie other then that. He's used ton set up the story in many ways he brings Spider-Man back onto the screen and he's never never seen again till the end of the movie. So don't expect anything massive from this villain in this movie I expect that he's been set up ready for the sequel or the sinsiter six movie which is due out in the near distant future. But for what little amount of the movie that he does star in he is very funny I feel your more meant to laugh at him and he's meant to be the butt of Spideys jokes. I never felt like he was there to be a serious character in the story and if he was then they have done a poor job of showing that because all I did was laugh at him for the 10minutes or so of the film that he started in.

Then we have Green Goblin everyone's faviroute Harry Osbourne turns up in this movie the child friend of Peter Parker who may I say is portrayed brilliantly in this movie. Move over Franco there's a new Harry in town and he plays it so much better and I will go as far to say that he is a better Goblin then Defore. That's a bold statement but I felt that he fit the character a lot more and he was properly creepy and terrifying when you see him turn up on that glider and see his face that smile will haunt you. It's like hannibal lecter in silence of the lambs the first time you ever saw that and heard him voice it just resonates with you for hours maybe days after and that's what I felt with this character. They have done very well with this character in introducing the character, making him the goblin and fighting Spidey all in the 2 hour time frame of the movie. The film feels very fleshed out and paced very well which I loved I never felt like we were having to much thrown at us at once. Which I think is a lot of people's fears coming into this film that we were just going to have another Spider-Man 3 fiasco again let us not talk about that film those. But Harry as a character is very much as I have always imagined him to be someone that hated him father for the relationship he had with him and hates Spider-Man for a better reason then you killed by dad even those he was evil so are spend the rest of my time moping about it. Yeah I'm talking about you Franco. Also Peter and Harry in this film they look like friends and they feel like childhood friends which I never felt with the Rami films they never looked like they were your typical best friends. But they fit in this film and they have some great dialogue and scenes together as they talk old childhood memories and Peter realises that this isn't that same kid that he knew as a child anymore. Let's just say that you are in for a treat with this one because while his time as the goblin is short we are looking at some great times ahead for this menace on a glider.

But the three villain set up for this film is less there villain and more two which I will just say this now that anyone that was moaning about there being three villains we were told a while ago that Rigno didn't have a big part in this story. So I wasn't very surprised to see that he didn't really have much going on in this film there's a lot of set up for future instalment in the series in this film so there will be a lot of people that will find this film quite weak. Which while I won't disagree with that as I think that they have missed a opportunity by making it more family friendly I think it shows the potential for a long on going series for the webbed crusader.

So let's talk about the comedy there's to much of it not to say that the jokes aren't funny but when you have at sorry that is quite serious and sad at its core the comedic value sometimes feel out of place. So if you are looking for a serious film then you out of luck here wih this one because they have tried to go more family friendly with this film. It's mostly due to the fact that I feel that they have more to lose with this film rather then say Marvel would with any of their films. But this film I will say has a very serious and sad story behind it as Peter tries to work out whether he can carry on his relationship with Gwen while he's still Spider-man because he made a promise to her dad if you remember. I just wish that they had stream lined the comedy in the film to the odd joke here and their because it doesn't work when you have a villain such as Electro who is about as funny as sack of potatoes. But when the comedy works Andrew Garfield does very well with it he pulls off being funny with ease and manages to make you giggle with simple slapstick comedy at times. Such as for example screaming as he ends up on the front of a police car which to be fair to him is funny and it's what you expect from Spider-man he's a kid at the end of the day.

Talking of Spidey there's less Spidey and a lot more Peter in this film as he tries to find out just what happened to his parents and why they left him all those years ago. As well as trying to forge a relationship with Gwens his guilt overtakes him for her father and they promise that he made to her. They have definantly made a story of young love that is very easy to relate to which I loved about this film it feels a lot more real and relatable the everyday parts not the Spidey bits. (Before any of you out their start being smart) I won't talk to much about the story between Peter and Gwen as it's very hard to talk about any of it without it being a massive spoiler for the story. So I will just say that Spidey comes second in this story to Peter as he struggles with everyday life it feels less superhero movie and more teen drama at times which isn't so much a bad thing really. But like I said in maybe a few days time once the film has been out a few days are talk in a post in full about the film and it's likely to go for here.

But overall to say that they won me over with this film is an understatement I went into this film with clear thoughts on this movie that it was going to be a bad sequel to a not so great reboot. But I think that they have managed to make up with where they went wrong in the first movie and make a very solid Spidey movie. They have made a movie that is much more faithful to the comics which any fan will be happy with and should make you excited for where we are likely to go from here with the sequels to come in the future. While they might have chosen to go down a more family friendly route which I think is a missed opportunity for a girttier and dark story it still doesn't take away froma solid instalment in the series. The three villain system works for this film as Electro stand out from the rest and shows just why you shouldn't mess with him don't leave your batteries near him unless you want a nasty shock. With a final 30 minutes that is brilliant and action packed and is so spoilers and exciting that it's troubling me to keep quiet about just how brilliant it is. I was pleasantly supposed with this film and it makes me excited for the third film that looks promising to just go that one step further then this film did. All we need for the third film is more goblin and are be happy as he's amazing and creepy and that smile just makes me scared thinking about it. Just don't believe all you read about this film as I think that people are being harder on this film then they should be. Take it from someone that had already made his point clear that he was going to hate it before he saw it. And now I can't not but praise it. But overall amazing movie and if we have to wait two years or three years for a third one I will quiet happly wait as I trust were in for a treat.
